Obama Calls for Understanding in Notre Dame Commencement Address

AP/Charles Rex Arbogast

President Barack Obama did not shy away from controversy at yesterday's Notre Dame commencement address. Hundreds of anti-abortion protestors descended on South Bend to decry the president's pro-choice stance. And he talked about it openly.

Though a handful of protestors tried to shout down his speech to graduates, Mr. Obama delivered his message. The president says differences over abortion shouldn't keep us from finding what he says is common ground.

OBAMA: So, let us work together to reduce the number of women seeking abortions. Let's reduce unintended pregnancies.

In spite of the controversy that ignited debate on the Catholic campus, the 13,000 who filled the Joyce Center gave the president several standing ovations.

Notre Dame president John Jenkins came under heavy fire for inviting the president. But he said sunday that Mr. Obama honored the university with his visit.

I'm an ardent pro-lifer, and I have no objection to Obama speaking at the commencement. What I don't understand or agree with is that an ostensibly pro-life institution would present him with an honorary degree. If Arizona State could forgo such an award, then certainly Notre Dame could have.

Kurt -- An honorary degree acknowledges a person's accomplishments (e.g., 44th president of the US), it doesn't indicate agreement or blanket moral approval. I don't think anybody is confused about where Notre Dame stands on the abortion issue. Also, citing ASU as a source for anything more important than guidance on SPF numbers kind of undercuts your argument, esp. when you consider the modest CV of many of the people who have received honorary degrees from ASU.
