Illinois Agency Details How Cuts Will Hit Artists

The Illinois Arts Council is providing artists with details about how state budget cuts will hit them.

Arts Council Executive Director Terry Scrogum says the cuts will come in a range of areas. A program that brings touring artists to schools and communities is suspended, and so are teen jobs in the arts. Several other programs are also on hold or cut to the bone.

Scrogum says that's because the state art council budget has been cut by more than half.

SCROGUM: The arts are not a spigot you can turn on and turn off because it's all about development of skills, audiences. It takes time to build that back. And some of it may not come back at all.

Scrogum's expecting some groups to cut back on hours or stop offering free performances.  He says next year could be even worse without more revenue. That's because the stimulus money will be gone too.
