Indiana's Job Outlook Brightens

Indiana’s unemployment rate continues to drop while neighboring states like Illinois aren’t doing so well.

Indiana’s jobless rate is now below the national average, the first time that’s happened in nearly a year.

The state reported yesterday (Wednesday) a 9.6 percent jobless rate for September, a decline of more than one percent in the last three months.

Marc Lotter, spokesman for the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, says the state welcomes the news but thinks the rate will spike up soon.

LOTTER: It’s just too early to say we’ve turned the corner. We expect the number will go up a little bit here in the winter as we have a traditional end of the construction season. Things are pulling in the right direction right now. We’re bucking the trend of the nation and many of our Midwest neighbors, so that’s a good sign.

Lotter says jobs in manufacturing, professional and the service sector helped lower Indiana’s unemployment rate.

Meanwhile, Illinois’ unemployment rate increased by a half-percent in September and is now at 10.5 percent.
