United Nations Housing Specialist Investigates Chicago

A housing investigator on behalf of the United Nations is visiting Chicago as part of her national tour.

Raquel Rolnik is an urban planner and professor in Brazil. She’s touring the U.S. because of community concerns surrounding foreclosures, displacement and high rents.

The UN Human Rights Council created the position of special rapportuer to investigate housing issues worldwide. Rolnik has held the job for the last year and a half. She says she’s studied U.S. housing policy that guided creating mixed-income communities.

ROLNIK: I realized that one of the first city’s that the program was put in place was Chicago so I could see not only the demolition but the new developments.

Rolnik’s assessing the Chicago Housing Authority’s massive Plan for Transformation amid concerns from local community groups about displacement. She will present her findings on Chicago and other U.S. cities before the UN General Assembly in March.
