U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is urging states to enroll uninsured children in federal health insurance programs. Speaking today in Chicago, Sebelius says there are about 5 million eligible kids who are not covered.
SEBELIUS: We need to enroll them in the program that they're currently eligible for. And we need to at the same time do anything possible at the state level to keep eligible kids enrolled.
Sebelius recognizes the challenge local governments face during the recession in finding kids who are not yet covered by the Children's Health Insurance Program, or CHIP. She says the feds have committed $100 million over the next several years to help community outreach programs. Earlier this year, President Barack Obama signed a bill that allows 7 million children to continue coverage through CHIP.
