Chicago’s celestial landscape is bright and beautiful, but it’s virtually invisible because it’s obscured behind the orange glow that emerges from the city’s streetlights and buildings each night. This obscured sky has hundreds of thousands of stars, dotted with bright travelling planets, crisscrossed by satellites and burning meteors. To see that sky, you need a dark sky, and in Chicago — a city of stage-lit skyscrapers, sprawl and sodium streetlights — it just doesn’t get dark enough to see more than a handful of the brightest stars and planets.
