After 8 years, Chicago’s-own Derrick Rose is leaving the Bulls. The team Wednesday traded its franchise player to the New York Knicks.

The Knicks sent center Robin Lopez and guards Jose Calderon and Jerian Grant to Chicago in the deal that was completed Wednesday. New York also received guard Justin Holiday and a 2017 second-round pick.

The Knicks have been seeking a point guard and Rose was one of the NBA's best before multiple knee injuries slowed the former No. 1 pick's career. He played in 66 games last season, his most in five years, and averaged 16.4 points.

During his time with the Bulls, Rose was named Rookie of the Year and the NBA’s Most Valuable Player. He seemed destined to lead his hometown team back to championship glory. But after several disappointing years plagued by injury, Bulls management says it’s time to move in a different direction.

WBEZ sports contributor Cheryl Raye-Stout has been on the sidelines -- and in the training rooms -- for every step and misstep of Rose’s career and gives some insight into the trade. Click above to listen.
