Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy joined Mayor Rahm Emanuel Monday in pushing for increased gun laws in the city and state.
McCarthy said he supports a ban on assault weapons and gun magazines that can hold a large number of bullets. He said even the most ardent supporters of the Second Amendment recognize there are limits.
“The fact is the Second Amendment gives us the right to bear arms, yet we don’t seem to have a discussion as to whether or not we should be carrying hand grenades or rocket launchers or mortars or cannons in our society.”
Mayor Emanuel is expected to introduce an ordinance this week that would require gun owners to report anytime a gun is lost, stolen or sold. McCarthy says that will be an important law to prevent illegal gun sales.
McCarthy made these remarks at a press conference highlighting the Chicago Police Department’s seizure of 302 firearms thus far in 2013. He shared a story about being a member of the NRA as a child rifle sportsman.
