Since the 1970's, critics have called the dominant U.S. economic philosophy neoliberalism. They see U.S. application of neoliberalism as opportunistic and coercive.

Today we continue our Critical Thinking on Capitalism series with a better handle on what neoliberalism is — after all, its term that's not really used much in this country.

Wendy Brown is author of the essays Neoliberalism and the end of Liberal Democracy and American Nightmare: Neoliberalism, Neoconservatism, and De-Democratization. And she's Professor of Political Science at the University of California-Berkeley .
