Gulag from Ronachan Films on Vimeo.

Angus Macqueen's Gulag documents the history of the forced labor camps during the Stalin era of the Soviet Union through first-person accounts from prisoners and their jailers.

The 1999 documentary was reintroduced to new audiences at the Telluride Film Festival last year and will run in 2017 on the BBC.

WBEZ film contributor, Milos Stehlik talks with the award-winning filmmaker about how lessons from this dark era can apply to Vladimir Putin’s Russia today.
